The Real Truth

11 days until surgery

Ironically on Thursday I started my all liquid diet.
Hhhmmmmm coincidence?  I thought it was a migraine but as I continued the liquid diet for Thursday and Friday the headache got worse, I became nauseated, very dizzy and aches and pains all over my body. By Sunday I was feeling better and not as hungry.  So WHAT WAS IT? Am I allergic to the whey in the protein drinks?  Do I have the flu?   Well after going to my trusty  GOOGLE I typed in:

“high protein liquid diet headaches “

ahhh BINGO  I think I found the culprit 1000’s of pages.. all about “Induction Headache”, “Adkins Flu”, Pre-Surgery Diet Heachaches”. So this is something common that my Dr. never told me about.

The Atkins induction flu is a term used to describe the side effects sometimes experienced by Atkins dieters when they start restricting their carbohydrate intake to very low amounts. The symptoms of the Atkins induction flu include fatigue, weakness, dizziness, headaches, irritability and nausea.

There are two main causes of the side effects sometimes experienced when starting on a low-carb diet. The first is carbohydrate withdrawal. Most people are used to eating about 50 percent of their calories as carbohydrates, so drastically switching to a low-carb diet comprising less than 5 percent to 10 percent of the calories as carbohydrates is a big dietary change. If your body was used to running on carbohydrates, you might require some time to adjust. The second cause is dehydration. Low-carbohydrate diets tend to be diuretic and help you get rid of unwanted extra water in your body, but if you do not properly replenish the lost fluids and electrolytes, dehydration and the accompanying side effects can occur.

No More liquid Diets Please

I know it wasn’t the water intake because I have been crazy drinking water.  So I do believe I have diagnosed myself. I was having Carbohydrate Withdrawls!

Scary right?  That I have been that dependent on Carbohydrates that my body goes through withdrawal when I try to right the wrong.

Good News.. it is day 4 and I am feeling good.  However I didn’t follow my plan exactly.  This is what I am doing (as once again I am diagnosing myself and new after extensive self research I am changing my plan a bit)

Instead of 4 shakes a day, I am doing 3 shakes a day and a small lean protein and raw non starch veggie each evening.  Boy do I love this small 3 oz grilled chicken breast and broccoli after only shakes during the day.  I feel good, no headaches, no dizziness, feel like I am losing weight as well.  3 Days before surgery I will go back to the 100% liquid protein diet.

I have to say, I am looking forward to no more dieting!  Because being hungry all the time STINKS!

OMG the pre op liquid diet is HELL!!!! I was almost to the point of tears. I am only 11 days post op right now, so I remember the feeling quite well. Are you not supposed to be eating lean protein and just breaking the rules? or are you allowed? I cheated alot of my pre op diet. I was supposed to do 2 weeks and only did 1. And on that 1 week, I ate a couple things. ITS HARD.

I wish you good luck girl! And after surgery, you will still be hungry and still be on liquids (at least I am)… it still is going to suck for a little bit…. but after a while I should get a little better. I just started eating chicken today and it was AMAZING. 😛

wow, this is the first time I have actually heard someone say this SUCKS! I am cheating to have the lean protein a day. Tonight I was so hungry with the worst headache I ate some cheese slices. No carbs right? Another time in my life I would of felt accomplished. Now I just feel like I am cheating. I was hoping after surgery it would take my hunger pains away.. no?

I am 2 weeks post op now and I am just starting to not have hunger pains anymore. Even when I havent eaten in a while. I think it takes your body a while to adjust.

Oh Nooooooooo. Nothing worse than feeling sick…. especially when technically you are not sick. At least you are getting closer to being on the other side 🙂

Yes, at least it is over and now I am starting to see a rainbow. How are you doing misslapband this week?

Awesome. Nervous. Excited. 19 days to go. I’m really enjoying reading your story. Helps me realise that I am not alone and that everyone goes through the some ‘mental game’ leading up to the day.

My gosh I can’t even imagine trying that…

After watching the documentary “Fat, Sick, And Nearly Dead” my husband and I bought a juicer and decided to do a two-week juice only diet. The issue: all the veggie only juices tasted like butt-hole. We were so hungry and miserable that we quit after a day and a half… feeling defeated and hungry :/ Fad diets suck.
